Hines Rowing History
Creating more than athletes for over 20 years in Conshohocken, PA.
Hines Rowing Center was started from the dedication to rowing, and the empowerment of education in the sport. HRC is named and dedicated to the legacy of George Hines. Mr. Hines started lightweight rowing during the spring of 1945. He found his way on the water by going out for rowing with LaSalle College High School, rowing out of Vesper Boat Club when John Kelly Sr, coaching the team, let George know at 130 pounds he wasn't making the cut. George headed to Malta Boat Club and has been a member for over 75 years.
After serving the Navy for a few years, George went to LaSalle College, and at 160 was finally at rowing weight. This was in 1952, where during his senior year at LaSalle College, there were only 9 guys; they only lost one regatta that year...(not the Dad Vail). George went to Law School, and then back to LaSalle College High School to coach. Where George led his boys to many Catholic League Championships, cinching second at Nationals in 1956, and winning Nationals in 1965.
Once retired from college coaching, George Hines became Vice Chairman of the Dad Vail Association - the Organizing Committee of the race from 1973 to 1984. George and Lois Trench - Hines met through the world of rowing, and together have been able to support the world of rowing through coaching, education, and creating a legacy through Hines Rowing Center. Lois found the HRC campus we know today in 2001. After leasing the property for a few years, the decision to purchase the campus we know, and love today, in 2005. Hines Rowing Center took over the property management of the campus, supporting Whitemarsh Boat Club Inc. to continue their efforts, and education in the rowing community. WBC has truly set a wonderful footprint for rowing to continue to grow. George and Lois Trench - Hines met through the world of rowing, and together have been able to support the world of rowing through coaching, education, and creating a legacy through Hines Rowing Center.
